Who We Are

The Coalition of Nunavut District Education Authorities (CNDEA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to
supporting District Education Authorities (DEAs) across Nunavut. As the unified voice for DEAs, we provide guidance, advocacy, and training to strengthen local education governance and ensure students receive a quality education that reflects Inuit culture, language, and traditions.
CNDEA is funded by the Government of Nunavut, allowing us to continue our work in empowering DEAs, supporting bilingual education, and advocating for policies that meet the unique needs of Nunavut communities.
What is a DEA?

A District Education Authority (DEA) is a locally elected board responsible for overseeing the administration of education in each Nunavut community in collaboration with Regional School Operations and school staff. DEAs play a crucial role in decision-making for their schools, including establishing the school calendar, developing
attendance policies, and providing oversight to school staff. Each DEA consists of seven locally elected members who work together to ensure that education aligns with community needs and priorities. There are 27 DEAs across Nunavut, including the Commission scolaire francophone du Nunavut (CSFN).
DEA members are elected during regular elections. The rules governing DEA elections are outlined in the Nunavut Elections Act. If a board position becomes vacant between elections, a new member is appointed rather than elected through a by-election. DEAs are
funded by the government and play an essential role in maintaining community ownership of schools and ensuring education reflects the values and priorities of Nunavummiut.
