Our History and Growth

Since its inception, the Coalition of Nunavut District Education Authorities (CNDEA) has expanded its role in supporting education governance across Nunavut. Here’s a look at key milestones in our journey.

  • 2000

The Act to Amend the Divisional Education Councils Dissolution Act received Royal Assent, laying the groundwork for a new education governance structure.

  • 2006

CNDEA was officially created, elected its first Board of Directors, and became registered with Nunavut Legal Registries.

  • 2008

CNDEA hired its first Executive Director and gained formal recognition in Nunavut's Education Act, which included funding for two staff positions and an advisory role to the Minister on DEA funding processes.

  • 2020

Bill 25 expanded CNDEA's responsibilities, including training for all DEAs and funding for additional employees.

  • 2022

A renewed contribution agreement supported further growth, budgeting for increased positions and travel to enhance DEA training across Nunavut. With this support, the CNDEA hired staff and began traveling to communities to deliver in-person training sessions to DEAs.

This timeline reflects CNDEA’s commitment to empowering DEAs, advocating for strong education policies, and ensuring a collaborative approach to education governance in Nunavut.
